JCF reviews missing person protocol after 8-year-old’s death

COMMISSIONER of Police Major General Antony Anderson says the protocols surrounding missing persons is to be reviewed.In a statement Thursday, Anderson said instructions have been given for the assessment of the response mechanism and protocols around missing persons to be done.

Five shot, two fatally, in St Andrew

FOLLOWING the shooting of five people in separate incidents in Standpipe, St Andrew, on Thursday night, the police are now trying to determine whether the incidents are connected. Two of those shot have died. They have been identified as 23-year-old Romaine Minott, otherwise called “Baggie” of Old Hope Road in St Andrew, and Junior Brown, 29, of Cedar Valley, also in St Andrew.

4,000 cops needed

MINISTER of National Security Dr Horace Chang says that a professional review of the 19 police territorial divisions suggests the need for an additional 4,000 cops to ensure adequate staffing.However, it is unlikely that the magic figure will be met within another few years, with only 1,000 to be trained this year, and another 500 expected to be trained next year.

Jamaica falls but outranks neighbours on press freedom index

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — The Paris-based Reporters Without Borders or Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) Thursday named Jamaica as the Caribbean country that most respects freedom of information.In its 2019 World Press Freedom Index, the RSF, which conducts political advocacy on issues relating to freedom of information and freedom of the press, placed Jamaica at number eight out of a total of 180 countries examined.

Eye care mission could exceed surgery target

HEALTH Minister Dr Christopher Tufton says the visiting Bright Journey Eye Care Mission is set to exceed its target of 500 cataract surgeries.The 11-member Chinese technical team is performing free cataract surgeries at Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) on Jamaicans in need.The members, who began working at KPH from April 2 and will end on April 26, comprise five ophthalmologists, three nurses, two engineers, and one technician.
