Infrastructure upgrading in Mount Salem 70 per cent complete

THE Zone of Special Operations (ZOSO) Social Intervention Committee is reporting that infrastructure upgrading in Mount Salem, St James, is advanced.Deputy chairman of the committee, Omar Sweeney, said that 70 per cent of work under the ‘build phase’ of the operation has been completed to date.“The drainage system, the road improvement, the zinc fence removal [and], the solid waste infrastructure and collection are going well,” he said.

False alarm

The Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) has denied claims of a significant oil find in Jamaica.Last Sunday, reports surfaced that international agencies were reporting Jamaica had found oil and gas reserves of significant quantities which would have put the island 54th in the world.Yesterday, the PCJ summoned the media to a briefing but cancelled it, instead issuing a news release rejecting the reports.

THE Social Development Commission (SDC) has launched an anti-violence campaign in Hanover to raise awareness and help stem the occurrence of violence against women and children.The ‘Violence Prevention against Women and Children’ campaign was launched on May 13, as part of the Hanover SDC’s week of activities, at its Watson Taylor Park office in Lucea, Hanover. The Hanover SDC Week runs from May 13 to 17.

Caricom again calls for end to US embargo against Cuba

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (CMC) — Secretary general of the Caribbean Community (Caricom), Irwin LaRocque yesterday called on the United States to lift the “unwarranted economic embargo and sanctions” against Cuba.Addressing the 22nd meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations, LaRocque said that next month the 15-member grouping will host the Sixth Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Caricom and Cuba.

Celebration turns to mourning for ‘Tutty Gran Rosie’

What was supposed to be a day of celebration for Bridgette “Tutty Gran Rosie” Bailey quickly turned to mourning yesterday morning when her son Danekey Bailey was shot and killed.The younger Bailey, otherwise called Coco, was seeking treatment for a previously inflicted gunshot wound at Maxfield Park Health Centre in Kingston when the incident occurred, some time near 9:30. A female was also shot and injured in the incident.
